Here is an overview of each Essential Oil, with supplementary information, whenever possible. This list is not complete and is being constantly updated.
Bella Mia Boutique's Glossary of Essential Oils,
Fragrance Oils,
Absolutes,
Concretes, Floral Waxes and CO2 extracts
Essential Oils: An Essential Oilis the aromatic and volatile extract of a plant. The Essential Oil may be liquid, semi-solid or solid, depending upon the product and climatic conditions. Oils are obtained through expression or steam distillation of the plant. We use these oils in soap and lotions, as well as candles, potpourri, aromatherapy and perfuming. According to Jeanne Rose, “Some Essential Oils are not in the living tissue, but are formed during the destruction of the living tissue. Certain botanical species have little scent, but they produce a volatile or Essential Oilwhen macerated begins a fermentation (destructive) process. The macerate is then distilled the volatile oil comes off.”
Fragrance Oils: Fragrance Oils have usually been mixed with other synthetic oils or substances. Fragrance oils are usually cheaper. Some oils can have adverse affects such as headaches and dizziness. This is due to them being impure or possibly synthetic. At Bella Mia, we only manufacture and sell bath and body products, oils, butters & lotions which are made with pure Essential Oils whenever possible. If they're not, they are properly label to reflect such.
Absolutes: Absolute oils are extracted from flowers, leaves or bark. The majority of Essential Oils are produced by the process of steam distillation. Some flowers, however, are too delicate for steam distillation (they get very damaged) and so their oils are more prolifically produced by extraction or enfleurage, as explained below. These oils are called Absolute oils (Absolutes). An Absolute oil should not really be called an Essential Oil, it is an essence, it has a very high concentration of fragrance and a little goes a long way. An Absolute oil is volatile, meaning it evaporates as opposed to a fixed oil which does not. Absolute oils are generally more expensive to buy than steam distilled oils.
