A member of the Rutaceae family, amyris is native to Haiti but is now grown in tropical zones throughout the world. Some Amyris essential oil is steam distilled and produced in Haiti. Amyris is also known as West Indian rosewood and West Indian sandalwood, though it has no relation to sandalwood.
Amyris essential oil is somewhat viscous, offering a warm-woody bottom note. Use as an anchor in pest blends, with such oils as citronella, lemongrass or lemon eucalyptus. Works well as a scent fixative in soaps. Blends well with herbal and green oils such as rosemary, lavender and lavandin and also with other woods, such as cedarwood and rosewood.
